Racism in fiction?
Eh, not really. My biggest problem is most likely that I barely notice races, aside from black people who are, well, black. And I have nothing against them, only a vague curiosity over the local mixed couples who are all black male white female, which baffles me. Or did until I met the black lesbians and solved the mystery of where the black ladies were. ^__^ But black men can be very hot. That one guy on Stargate Atlantis was yum until he went all psycho crazy. I stopped watching about then, cause my eyecandy went away. :(
Asians are fun too, though they're so overdone that I think I kind of shy away just because all the Japan-fangirls have kinda killed the happy there. And I don't really have a good enough knowledge base to write the other types, though I'm thinking Tibetan or Mongolian... hmm... and I love Chinese outfits. *__* Need to rewrite Chao Mein's story.
I did the Aztec thing... what other major races are there? Aboriginies, I suppose... I like Indians too. Totally taking up Shiva some day. <3
Cobecat rocks us all at cool cultural stories. *purr* Yes she does.
I guess that original poster chick was all bent out of shape by her lack of interracial couples and stuff, but for me that's only par for the course as the worlds that most of my stuff is set in are somewhat... feudal? Segregated? I mean, Aztecs only had other mesoamerican peoples to deal with until whats-his-face f*cked everything up, so no opportunity for interracial there... Green Planet probably should be more varied than it is, though I guess the Sendrians being a whole different species kind of count? *ponder* Actually, I have a lot of inter-species couples. *grin* I like diversity in my boys. And unless the setting calls for it, my brain insists on no couples having the same hair color. Artistically prettier that way or something.
I do feel occasionally guilty about having no 'true' black characters, but that's for stupid artist aesthetic reasons. I don't like black-person hair. I have an awful long-hair fetish, and that clashes horribly with afros. So while I'll gleefully give characters dark skin (Sigma, Ziern, Niven, Karai, Jinx) I have to give them something-else hair for my own selfish preferences. 9.9 I wonder if I can blame Marvel's Storm and her smexy dark skin and swishy white hair for that particular preference...
*snort* Actually, now that I think about it, Arvik and Lei may be the ultimate interracial couple. Doesn't get any more diverse than a sea-critter and a land-critter...
As for the lesbian/het thing, I'm a slash writer. I like my boys with boys. So obviously, those are going to dominate. I do have a few background lesbians who make me giggle as they spontaneously lose ribbons, but they'll never be MCs. Not my thing. *shrug* Neither is het, which is even more underrepresented than lesbians. Really, the lesbians are way more fun. Except maybe Hilda and her Grun, cause that still makes me snicker. ^__^
... I kind of forgot what I was saying. Boys are pretty. Medium-dark boys like Indian/Arabian ones are really pretty, especially if they have accents. Or that one Caribbean guy who asked me to coffee. Kinda wish I'd said yes. Girls can be pretty too, especially the ones in those tight, short shorts I saw in the bathroom once, but the boys are more fun to play with.
And I am an American. We have lots of colors. They're all American to me, unless they've got that really-thick just-immigrated-accent thing going on. The fun thing about colors is that you can put them together like a rainbow to get pretty effects. ^__^

Date: 2009-04-16 09:43 pm (UTC)It's actually kind of interesting that most non-caucasian races all have black hair, and white persons have a variety. If only some of those recessive genes could overpower the SuperStrong black-hair genes, there would be some really really yummy mixes running around...

Date: 2009-04-17 03:43 am (UTC)Ergh, no, dreads don't count. Dreads are awful. There's a bunch of hippie types that shop at my store and I always want to tell them to go wash their hair or something. x__x

Also, don't sell yourself short--I think your stories do deal with issues of identity and hybridity, even if the cultural affiliations of your characters might not. *nods*

Date: 2009-04-22 04:41 pm (UTC)Some of the Kidnapped ones do, I suppose, since I have a mixed bag of races there. Most of the pure fantasy ones do not, though, since the setting doesn't really have a lot of room for multi-culturalism. Medieval fantasyland didn't have much contact with the Rest Of The World. ^^;;
