Hummer & Bubba (Tennessee mechanical engineers) were standing at the base of a flagpole, looking up.

A woman walked by and asked what they were doing.

"We're supposed to find the height of the flagpole," said Bubba, "but we don't have a ladder."

The woman took a wrench from her purse, loosened a few bolts, and laid the pole down. Then she took a tape measure from her pocket, took a measurement, announced, "Eighteen feet, six inches," and walked away.

Bubba shook his head and laughed. "Ain't that just like a woman! We ask for the height and she gives us the length!"

Bubba and Hummer are currently working for the government.

Uh, counldn't she just have measured the shadow of the flagpole and the angle of elevation of the sun, then used trigonometry? That way she wouldn't have to take it apart.

that's what I was thinking, but then she'd need a whatchamatcallit, the thing with the angles marked out and the string, or bubbles on the fancier ones.

Is it sad that I looked at that and thought "Oooh! You could do that with trigonometry!" ^_^''
