tygati: (Kidnapped)

I have a whole list of concepts for Kidnapped stuff that needs to be written, and I am slowly whittling it down... :)

Little Brother

It had been a very long trip from the Academy to Zero, and the numerous delays had made it so that it was half past the midnight hour before Pyotr actually managed to walk through the door into his room. He dumped all his things in a pile, resolving to deal with them in the morning, and was halfway to his bed after stripping to his skin before he realized that the room wasn't empty.

Curled up in his bed and breathing softly was a small figure, dark hair splayed haphazardly across the pillows. Cautiously Pyotr nudged the lights up a notch or two, blinking when the illumination became enough that he could make out details. Pale green skin and a very familiar face. Tau Ceti. There was a seven year old Gremlin sleeping in his bed.

Somewhat bemused, Pyotr dimmed the lights back down again and hunted around for a pair of soft pants. Drawing them on, he slipped into the unoccupied side of the bed and relaxed, listening to his young friend's steady breathing. There was no use in wondering how Tau Ceti had gotten in - if it was electronic, Tau could bend it to his will. That included the sophisticated, state of the art locks on the Kavalerov Estate. He idly wondered just how upset the makers of those locks would be to know that they'd been circumvented by a determined seven-year-old.

What was more interesting was the why. Most of a term they'd been friends, visiting whenever Pyotr was back on Zero, and sometimes when the mischievous Gremlin decided to follow him back to whichever Academy he was studying at currently. Though this was the first time he'd ever discovered the boy in his bed. He wondered how often it occurred while he was away. Granted, Tau Ceti's home life wasn't ideal, but still.

In some ways, Tau was much like your typical Gremlin. He had no idea who his father was, and his mother was far more interested in her electronics than in the offspring she'd produced. The twin brother who should have been closer to him than anyone was instead obsessively envious of the incredible things Tau could do. Thinking about it like that, Pyotr was fairly certain the answer to how often Tau Ceti commandeered his bed was 'every chance he got.'

Well, Pyotr didn't mind. It wasn't like he was home all that often to make use of it. Besides, having someone nearby made him feel a little less alone. That was the last thought he had, a small smile on his lips, as he closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.

The sound of voices woke him. Just outside his room, he thought. Blinking sleep out of his eyes he sat up, disoriented for a moment as to why he was wearing pants to bed. Then he remembered, looking around to find the room empty. Though not for long.

The door cracked open and two sets of eyes peered in, one at about waist level of the other. Upon seeing he was awake the door opened further to reveal Tau Ceti and Pyotr's formidable Aunt Veronika. That was a rather disturbing combination.

"Good morning. Get up. You need to eat. Lady Aunt made breakfast," Tau announced, crossing his arms and attempting to look as imposing as a seven year old Gremlin could.

Aunt Veronika only smiled, though that was almost worse. Pyotr slid out of bed, scrubbing a hand through his hair, and granted them both a tired smile. "I'm up, I'm up..." A minute or two of hunting turned up a clean shirt and a new pair of pants, during which his wake-up committee vanished. Once he was suitably dressed, Pyotr made his way down the myriad hallways of the Kavalerov Estate to the dining room.

He blinked at the array of food set out, finding and catching his uncle's gaze. The man looked equal parts bemused and resigned as he waved Pyotr to a chair. "Got you, did they?" Arkadii commented dryly.

"Uncle... how long has Tau Ceti been... here?" Pyotr asked cautiously as the aforementioned Gremlin reappeared with a hovering tray of drinks that passed themselves out. Fortunate, as the slender Gremlin was only just tall enough to see over the edge of the table. The drink tray was new. He wondered what else Tau had created in his absence.

Arkadii looked thoughtful. "He comes and goes. Spent about two months 'upgrading' the kitchen to make things easier for Nika."

"Better," Tau Ceti corrected, climbing into a chair. "I made it better."

Pyotr refrained from comment, making note to avoid the kitchen at all costs. His aunt joined them shortly, getting a brief morning kiss from her husband before sitting down. "I made plenty, so don't be finicky," she announced.

"Lots," Tau Ceti said helpfully, pushing a heaping plate at him. "You're too skinny."

"I am not," Pyotr refuted, looking up and noticing his aunt's raised brow. "I'm not."

Veronika snorted softly and sipped her tea, giving a slight nod to Tau who helpfully slid a plate of toast over toward him as well. Pyotr looked back and forth between them, feeling rather trapped, and shot a look at his uncle.

"Don't look at me," Arkadii chuckled. "I lost this fight weeks ago."

With a quiet sigh, Pyotr took a bite of his breakfast. It really was good, but then, his aunt was an excellent cook. He did, however, eye his young friend pointedly. "If I have to eat, then so do you."

Tau Ceti obediently took a bite, then grinned. "I like Lady Aunt's food. It's good."

Pyotr arched a brow but said nothing, instead taking another bite of food and wondering if his aunt knew how high of a compliment she'd been paid. Gremlins as a general rule thought eating to be a necessary evil. That Tau actually called it good was... odd.

"Thank you, Aunt," he said politely, deciding that he could manage to eat a little extra if it meant the young Gremlin would be doing the same. Besides, if a Gremlin thought he was too skinny, then he probably could stand to gain a little weight.

Though if Tau didn't stop sliding extra plates in front of him, he was going to start retaliating. Like a pushy little brother, Tau Ceti was.

Pyotr blinked, looking around the dining table again. Little brother. Pushy and protective, and still insecure enough to sleep in someone else's bed. He ducked his head before anyone noticed his smile, hiding it in a mouthful of eggs before someone could ask what was so amusing. That particular thought was one he'd never be able to voice in front of Tau Ceti, no matter how true it might be.

Besides, it would be interesting to see just how long it would take before the feisty Gremlin actually realized just what kind of relationship their unusual friendship had become.

Legal Projects

It wasn't often that Sigma had to duck upon entering Tau Ceti's workshop, but today he did, and quickly, to avoid getting hit in the head with a flying wrench. Two more tools followed suit, passing by too quickly for Sigma to properly identify, before he finally reached the workbench where his lover was sitting and throwing a tantrum.

"Something wrong?" he asked gently.

Tau Ceti jumped, spinning around to stare at him for a moment before sighing heavily and sliding off his stool into Sigma's arms. "Stupid Authorities," he grumbled.

Sigma blinked. "Authorities?" His eyes widened imperceptibly. "Did you finally get caught?"

The Gremlin squirmed out of his embrace and scowled up at him. "No. They commissioned me." He kicked a nearby phase relay emitter. "Stupid Authorities."

There was a brief silence, during which Sigma's brows rose toward his hairline. "If it's a legal project, what's so difficult about it?" he asked.

Tau Ceti scowled and reseated himself on his stool, spinning to glare at a large data pane. "That's exactly what's hard. I built one of these stupid things when I was ten, but they want me to do it legally!" he fumed.

Sigma couldn't help but laughing, stepping forward to wrap his arms around his volatile lover's shoulders. "Ah. I see. No wonder you prefer doing projects for the High Chancellor."

"Pyotr doesn't care if it's legal or not," Tau Ceti grumbled. "He just needs it to work." He poked dejectedly at the data pane. "Stupid Authorities."

"So..." Sigma leaned forward a bit, his chest pressed up against Tau Ceti's back as he peered at the scribbles masquerading as design notes. "Can you do it?"

Tau stiffened slightly and twisted to glare at him. "Of course I can do it. It's just a pain and I don't want to." He sighed. "But I need the points to buy the materials for my quantum dislocation project."

Whatever that was. Sigma decided he probably didn't want to know. "Not one of Kavalerov's projects, then?"

"No," Tau replied mournfully. "His projects I can make him pay for."

"Hmm." Sigma considered, then laughed softly. "So, do you need to be distracted for a little while? I still have half an hour left of break."

The Gremlin turned around to face him, grinning, project all but forgotten as he raised his arms to encircle Sigma's neck. "I thought you'd never offer."

1. "Besides, it would be interesting to see just how long it would take before the feisty Gremlin actually realize just what kind of relationship their unusual friendship had become."
About 30 years? Must be a record for something without any electronics! Makes me wonder why Pyotr was wearing anything when the Ice Princess transmission woke him...

2. Poor Tau having to re-invent something he'd already done and do it legally! I'm sure Sigma will make it worth his while!

Pyotr's fairly used to being woken up in the middle of the night by now. :) Automatic to pull on a pair of pants for modesty. ;)

Yay! Mini!Tau is so adorable. And it was definitely interesting to see Tau with Pyotr's aunt and uncle - I'm amused that they get on so well. I wonder how that came about - did Tau just move in one day? Did they catch him mooching around and invite him?

Legal Project is also delightful - I love how Tau is all stroppy just because he thinks the project is beneath him. Heh.

Poor Tau. Its not as much fun if they expect you to do it instead of being amazed when you come up with something new and better.
7 year old Tau just slightly higher than the table surface and sneaking into his bed so he can't sleep clothesless. Sooo sweet.

Oh, cute!! I love how Arkadii and Nika just take Tau Ceti in stride. Nika has even found an ally.^_^ So awesome to see how long ago Pyotr figured it out.

Yay, Sigma distraction to the rescue!

ps - I'm SO behind with your stories! But it's great fun catching up!!!
